Personal ID In The Oral Cavity- Tooth ID System
During the 911 disaster, a few of my colleagues functioned as forensic dentists. They studied radiographs, study models and examination charts to try to identify those lost during the terrorist attack. They worked 18 hours a day with limited results and were all totally fatigued. Now, if patients would take advantage of it, there is a fool proof technology to identify those lost to natural or man made disasters, i.e. hurricanes, floods, war casualties and terrorism. Though forensics will remain an established protocol, "Tooth ID System", when used, will be the method of choice. In this system an ID, in numbers or letters of the patient's choice is baked into the crown or laminate. There has been a data base established on the internet which can be accessed on a need to know basis. These ceramic imprints on the crown are resistant to heat (1775F) or attrition (placed on the lingual surface). To summarize, this procedure in non invasive and is unnoticeable except by professionals. Tooth ID System is an adjunct to the established forensic method of identification. When in place it provides a faster and easier closure for the decedent family and the authorities.
